The Weighing of the Heart "A Trip to the Afterlife" By Joan Hunt
Cricket (August, 1998)
Media: Colored ink on papyrus
The heart weighing scene is one of the most frequently depicted
images in manuscripts of ancient spells known as The Egyptian Book
of the Dead. I've wondered about that. What was is that made this
tableaux appeal so much to the ancient Egyptians? Was it the
monster Ammit, waiting to gobble up the sinner's heart? Was it
Anubis kneeling carefully at the scales? Thoth poised to write
down the results? The image possesses more emotional tension than
any other in Egyptian art.
