The border motifs that I used for this full-page illustration and
the other three pieces done for "A Match for Maydela" were based
on artwork decorating the ceilings of numerous wooden synagogues
that once stood in Poland and the Ukraine. When I first
encountered this body of work, I was astonished by the intensity
of the colors used in these beautiful frescos. All are gone,
destroyed in World War II.
