The stone in the foreground of this piece is actually a pre-Viking
6th century picture stone from the island of Gotland off southern
Sweden. Although many associate stones decorated with runes with
the Vikings, the images on the Gotland stones better convey the
world views of the 8th through 10th century Norse.
